A federal judge sentenced Fortunato Beltran, age 45, to 31 years in federal prison for conspiracy to sell methamphetamine and fentanyl, as well as selling those drugs, according to an April 7 announcement. A federal jury convicted Beltran on November 21, 2025.

The case centers on a Mexico-based drug trafficking organization that shipped large quantities of fentanyl and methamphetamine into Eastern North Carolina. Authorities say Beltran coordinated shipments from California and Mexico for distribution in the region. Agents with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) purchased more than $100,000 worth of drugs from Beltran’s organization during their investigation. The purchases included approximately 35 pounds of methamphetamine and nearly seven pounds of fentanyl.

“Drug trafficking creates a cycle of violence in our communities that too often includes illegal firearm use and possession,” said ATF Special Agent in Charge Alicia Jones. “Coordinated efforts among our local, state, and federal law enforcement partners help break up these drug trafficking networks, stop violent gun crimes, and make our neighborhoods safer.”

W. Ellis Boyle, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of North Carolina, announced the sentencing after it was handed down by Chief U.S. District Judge Richard E. Myers II. The ATF and DEA led the investigation into the case.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Ashley J. Avera and Special Assistant United States Attorney Alison N. Lester prosecuted the case.
