Terry Sherwood Slade, a 55-year-old resident of Charlotte, North Carolina, has been sentenced to 188 months in prison with an additional three years of supervised release. This sentence follows his conviction for Hobbs Act robbery and possession of a firearm by a felon. U.S. Attorney Russ Ferguson announced the sentencing for the Western District of North Carolina. In addition to this sentence, Slade will serve an extra 12 months and one day for violating his previous supervised release.
Court documents reveal that on November 20, 2023, while under federal supervision for a prior robbery conviction, Slade committed another robbery at the House of Clouds Smoke Shop in Charlotte. During this incident, he threatened an employee and took money and cigarettes from the store before fleeing.
Further records show that on December 3, 2023, Slade entered Nick’s Arcade in Charlotte and engaged in a struggle with a security guard and cashier before stealing the guard’s firearm. Armed with the weapon, he proceeded to steal cash from the arcade’s private office safe.
On December 13, 2023, Slade was identified as the shooter in an incident reported to the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD). The victim had been shot at following an argument with Slade. CMPD arrested Slade and found him in possession of the firearm stolen during the arcade robbery. Analysis confirmed that a cartridge from the shooting scene matched this firearm.
In September 2024, Slade pleaded guilty to both charges against him. His criminal history includes prior federal convictions for Hobbs Act robbery and multiple state felony convictions in North Carolina.
U.S. Attorney Ferguson acknowledged the efforts of both the Federal Bureau of Investigation and CMPD in investigating this case. He also thanked the U.S. Probation Office for its assistance throughout.
The prosecution was handled by the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Charlotte.
