Chief Justice Paul Newby has proclaimed April as Guardian ad Litem Child Advocate Month in North Carolina, according to an April 9 announcement. The North Carolina Judicial Branch and the Office of Guardian ad Litem are using this month to honor more than 3,000 volunteers who work to improve the lives of children and youth across the state.
The observance highlights the role that families and communities play in advocating for children and preventing child abuse and neglect. Throughout April, efforts focus on promoting child abuse prevention and supporting the social and emotional well-being of children and families.
“Our GAL volunteers are changing lives by providing children a voice in court,” said Chief Justice Newby. “A child with a GAL volunteer is more likely to find a safe, permanent home, is half as likely to re-enter the foster care system, and is more likely to succeed in school.”
More than 3,000 Guardian ad Litem advocates along with over 100 pro bono attorneys contribute their time serving abused and neglected children throughout North Carolina. This year’s recognition includes events held statewide at the local level through partnerships involving Guardian ad Litem staff, judges, clerks of court, other court agencies, partners, and community stakeholders.
