Fayetteville man pleads guilty to embezzling over $74K from local post office

A Fayetteville man has admitted to embezzling funds from the U.S. Postal Service and making false entries in government records. Robert Raquan Patterson, 29, pleaded guilty to both charges in federal court.

Court documents state that Patterson worked as a sales and services distribution associate at the Evergreen Post Office. In this role, he managed the office’s finances and had access to its financial systems. Between November 1, 2022, and July 30, 2024, Patterson issued 129 postal money orders for his own benefit and falsely reported debit and credit card payments linked to these transactions. The losses to the U.S. Postal Service totaled at least $74,735. The stolen funds were used for personal expenses such as hotels, flights, and cash withdrawals.

Patterson faces up to 240 months in prison when sentenced on August 7, 2025.

Daniel P. Bubar, Acting U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of North Carolina made the announcement after Chief U.S. District Judge Richard E. Myers II accepted the plea. The U.S. Postal Service, Office of Inspector General is investigating the case and Assistant U.S. Attorney Toby Lathan is prosecuting the case.
