A shocking lawsuit has been filed against a county detention center, alleging severe negligence leading to the tragic death of an inmate. On February 5, 2026, Valerie Mobley filed a complaint in the United States District Court for the Western District of North Carolina against multiple defendants, including Garry McFadden and Mecklenburg County. The lawsuit highlights grave concerns about the treatment and care provided to Renny De’Angelo Mobley during his time at the Mecklenburg County Detention Center Central (MCDCC).

The case revolves around the tragic events following Renny Mobley’s arrest on February 18, 2023. Despite disclosing his dual diagnoses of schizoaffective disorder and substance abuse disorder upon admission to MCDCC, he was never evaluated or treated by a psychiatrist during his detention until his untimely death on March 27, 2024. The complaint alleges that throughout this period, MCDCC staff failed to provide Mr. Mobley with necessary medication for his mental health conditions, leading him to self-medicate and ultimately suffer from drug toxicity. His condition deteriorated over several hours without intervention from medical or detention staff, culminating in his death after being found unresponsive in his cell.

Valerie Mobley accuses the defendants of deliberate indifference to Renny’s serious medical needs, violating his Fourteenth Amendment rights under U.S.C. §1983. The lawsuit also includes claims under North Carolina law for medical malpractice and corporate negligence against Reserve Health P.C., which was contracted to provide healthcare services at MCDCC. The plaintiff seeks compensatory damages for personal injuries and wrongful death as well as punitive damages under both federal and state laws.

The case is presided over by Judge [Name], with attorneys [Names] representing Valerie Mobley. The case ID is Case No.: 3:26-cv-00095.
