Roanoke Rapids police officer charged with child exploitation offenses

A Roanoke Rapids Police Department officer has been arrested on charges related to child exploitation. Isaac Nielsen, 31, was taken into custody by the FBI in Halifax County. At the time of his arrest, Nielsen was employed as a police officer.

According to court documents, an undercover officer began communicating with a user on a website known for sexual content in May 2025. During these interactions, Nielsen allegedly distributed child pornography and discussed his interest in sexual contact with children. The undercover officer’s agency determined that the user was located in North Carolina and alerted the FBI. On December 1, 2025, authorities identified Nielsen as the suspect and obtained an arrest warrant.

Nielsen faces charges of distribution and possession of child pornography. If convicted, he could receive a sentence ranging from five to thirty years in prison. Authorities emphasize that these are allegations and that “the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.”

Assistant U.S. Attorney Erin Blondel is prosecuting the case, which is being investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation Raleigh Durham Child Exploitation Task Force.

The investigation falls under Project Safe Childhood, a national initiative started by the Department of Justice in May 2006 to address child sexual exploitation and abuse online. The program brings together federal, state, and local agencies to find and prosecute individuals who exploit children through digital means and aims to identify victims for rescue.
