A Reidsville, North Carolina man was sentenced on Mar. 19 in Greensboro to 10 years in prison after pleading guilty to possessing ammunition as a previously convicted felon, United States Attorney Dan Bishop of the Middle District of North Carolina announced.

Lindsey L. Hayes, age 41, received a sentence of 120 months imprisonment and three years of post-release supervision from Chief/Senior United States District Judge Catherine C. Eagles in the United States District Court for the Middle District of North Carolina.

According to court records, officers with the Reidsville Police Department responded on January 7, 2025, to an apartment complex on Marcellus Street following a report of gunfire. Tenants reported hearing arguing and then gunshots. One tenant recalled hearing someone say “watch this,” while another heard “Open this door before I shoot this shit up.” Video surveillance showed Hayes approaching the apartment where the mother of his child lived, knocking and yelling through the door. After returning to his vehicle and coming back with a handgun, he knocked again using the weapon’s handle before firing multiple shots from his vehicle as he drove past the building.

Officers found two bullet holes in the siding and two spent shell casings near where Hayes’ vehicle had been parked. No firearm was recovered at the scene. Evidence presented during sentencing indicated that at least two people were inside the apartment at the time of the shooting.

Prior to this incident, Hayes had four previous convictions for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and was under post-release supervision for felony discharge of a weapon into occupied property and felony assault with physical injury of a detention employee. He had been released about two months before committing this offense.

Hayes pleaded guilty on December 4, 2025, to being a felon in possession of ammunition in violation of federal law. The case was investigated by local police and federal agents and prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Tracy M. Williams-Durham.
