Michael Tremayne Smith, a 40-year-old from Sugarland, Texas, has been sentenced to ten years in federal prison. The charges include burglary of a pharmacy and possession with intent to distribute Oxycodone. Smith entered a guilty plea on March 11, 2025.

Court documents reveal that Drugco Discount Pharmacy in Littleton, North Carolina, was burglarized on January 28, 2022. Security footage captured two individuals entering through the drive-thru window into the pharmacy area. They wore hooded sweatshirts, gloves, and masks while carrying large bags. The burglars quickly took several bottles of prescription medication valued at $5,786.

Later that day, a Franklin County Sheriff’s deputy stopped Smith on I-85 heading south. Inside his vehicle were multiple pill bottles labeled Oxycodone and promethazine matching those stolen from the pharmacy.

Smith’s passenger, LaCarlton Lee Johnson Jr., faced similar charges. He pled guilty and received an 87-month prison sentence.

The announcement was made by Daniel P. Bubar, Acting U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of North Carolina after sentencing by United States District Judge James C. Dever III. The case was investigated by the DEA, North Carolina SBI, and Franklin County Sheriff’s Office with prosecution led by Assistant U.S. Attorney Jennifer C. Nucci.
